Mattie Lou Ming Thompson and Daniel Christopher Mattingly were married Saturday evening at the bride’s family farm in Pounding Mill, Va. Dr. Lloyd LeGrand Thompson III, an uncle of the bride who was appointed by the Tazwell County Circuit Court as a one-day officiant, performed the ceremony.
The couple met at Yale, from which they graduated, she cum laude. The bridegroom also holds a master’s in East Asian Studies from Yale.
The bride, 27, is keeping her name. In June, she received a master’s in architecture at Harvard. She is the daughter of Chiu Yee Thompson and Michael C. Thompson of Cedar Bluff, Va. The bride’s parents are the owners of Cuz’s Uptown Barbeque, a Southern and Asian restaurant on the Thompson family farm.
The bridegroom, 29, is studying for a Ph.D. in political science at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a son of Kristi Mattingly and Kevin Mattingly of Washington, Vt. The bridegroom’s mother is a teacher at Dutch Neck Elementary School in West Windsor, N.J. His father is a science teacher and dean of faculty at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J.
