The Mountain Goats / Wye Oak

Like Harvey Darger or even Wesley Willis (except, rather than having spent time in a mental institution, having worked in one), John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats is one seriously compulsive writer. He spent his early years recording hundreds of songs straight to tape, with and without musical help, and (since the mid '90s) has released 14 proper full-lengths, including four in 2002 alone. Ranging from humorous rants on divorce to heartbreaking reflections on his abusive father, here is one case where compulsive never means dull.
