DULUTH -- Turning the pages of a book can evoke happiness, tears and suspense, depending on the story. How would it make you feel if the pages were turned into art?
For spring, the Gwinnett Public Library is teaming up with the Hudgens Center for the Arts to host the fifth annual Altered Books Contest. The competition showcases old books that have been shredded, colored and molded into works of art.
Now through the end of April, the public may enter in an altered book at any of the county's 15 library branches. In May, judges will select the final entries to be put on display at the Hudgens Center from June 8 to Sept. 7. The opening reception is held on June 14.
Any book can be used as an entry, except for library books. Participants are encouraged to burn, tear, rebound, paint, stamp and drill the pages to create a piece of art.
Last year the Altered Books Contest received more than 40 entries, and the Gwinnett County Public Library's partnership with the Hudgens Center for the Arts was awarded an Honorable Mention for Arts Partnership by ArtWorks! Gwinnett for their collaboration on the 2011 Altered Books contest and Pulp Fashion exhibit.
