Landmark Aviation of Houston is breaking ground on a new $39 million fixed base operation (FBO) facility for general-aviation aircraft at San Diego International Airport, expected to open by late 2014.

The company said an Oct. 17 ceremony is planned, with Landmark, airport and project construction leaders expected to attend.

Landmark Aviation will build and operate the facility, with a 20,000-square-foot terminal, a 250,000-square foot ramp and five hangars on 12.4 acres. The company has committed to achieving Platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority in 2012 awarded Landmark a 37-year lease to operate the FBO. The facility will replace the current FBO on Pacific Highway, which Landmark has operated since acquiring Jimsair Aviation Services Inc. in 2008.

Landmark Aviation operates 53 FBO facilities in the U.S. , Canada and Western Europe.

The FBO is among several improvements under way on the north side of San Diego International, including a new $316 million consolidated rental car center expected to open in 2016.
