The organization was established to help families in need of affordable housing and to revitalize underserved communities in the Bay Area. In the early years, the organization focused on building basic housing structures for low-income families and individuals in partnership with local churches and community groups. 

However, as the need for affordable housing continued to grow, HFHGSFB expanded its reach and programs to better serve the community. In the late 1990s, HFHGSFB introduced its first "sweat-equity" program, where low-income families could work alongside volunteers to build their own homes. This unique approach not only provided families with affordable housing but also empowered them to take an active role in building their future. In the early 2000s, HFHGSFB began to purchase and renovate foreclosed properties in the Bay Area, turning them into affordable housing options for families in need. This initiative allowed the organization to expand its impact and help more families achieve homeownership. In addition to building and renovating homes, HFHGSFB also offers financial education, coaching, and other resources to help families achieve long-term stability. The organization's programs also include home repairs and renovations for low-income seniors and veterans. Over the past three decades, HFHGSFB has helped over 500 families in the Bay Area achieve their dream of homeownership. The organization's impact has extended beyond just providing housing, as studies have shown that stable housing contributes to improved health, education, and economic opportunities for families. Today, HFHGSFB continues to work towards its mission of building and renovating affordable housing, creating homeownership opportunities, and strengthening communities in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. The organization is proud to have a strong network of dedicated volunteers, donors, and community partners who have helped make affordable housing a reality for hundreds of families.
